Phenol can be converted into salicylic acid by following the given steps :

Step 1 :- React phenol with NaOH to get sod.phenoxide ion (also called protection /masking step)

{ Note: step 1 is called protection or masking step because , if we react phenol directly with dry ice it will react with the hydrogen of hydroxyl group instead reacting with hydrogen of aryl group, so to prevent that reaction , we react phenol with NaOH first.

[Reason , removal of hydrogen from -OH group will make phenoxide ion more stable due to resonance as removal of hydrogen from aryl group at this stage becomes more difficult.]
