During exposure to air and sunlight, slow oxidation of chloroform forms a highly poisonous gas, carbonyl chloride (also known as phosgene).

2CHCl 3 +O 2→ 2COCl 2+2HCl

To prevent this, chloroform is stored in dark coloured bottles which cuts off exposure to light.

Ethanol is also added which prevents oxidation of chloroform and converts phosgene to ethyl carbonate which is harmless.
