Propane can be converted into hexane by following steps of reactions -

(i) React propane with chlorine ( Cl_{2} ) in the presence of sunlight , 1-chloropropane is formed .

(ii) React 1-chloropropane with sodium ( Na ) in the presence of dry ether , hexane is formed .

  • The reaction in the second step is known as the Wurtz reaction . This reaction is used to produce long chained alkanes .
