I think it's done by taking a particular area/segment of our head (like m x n square units) and then counting the number of hairs in it. Measuring the area where hairs grow on our head is easier than counting the number of hairs. After that, we can find total number of such segments by dividing total area by that small area. Then by multiplying it with number of hairs in a single segment, we will get approximate number of hairs on our head (approximate because density of hairs on different parts of our head is different.)

Suppose we've total 500 square cm area of our head, where hairs grow.

And we've a segment of head of size 1 square cm. Then we've 500/1 = 500 such segments. And if we've counted the number of hairs on in a particular segment, e.g. 200 hairs, then total number of hairs are:

500 x 200 = 100, 000 hairs
