This research is the outcome of the contributions of many people and organizations. Thus

we have accumulated debts to them, only a proportion of which we are acknowledging

here. International Labour Organization (ILO) extended its support to conduct this study.

Staff of the ILO at both Dhaka and Geneva offices always provided their generous support

for the whole period of the project. In particular, Mr. Alexius Chicham, National

Coordinator, Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Project, ILO country office for Bangladesh

provided and inspiration. He visited research sites during data collection and provided his

insightful comments and suggestions which helped us to accomplish this task successfully.

Geneva colleagues of ILO provided their insightful comments on data collection instruments

which helped us in finalizing interview schedules and checklists. All of them deserve

heartfelt thanks. Getting access to tea garden areas was possible due to the generous

support of two organizations who were working with tea garden workers. Mr. Nazmul

Haque, the executive director, Mr Pankaj Ghosh Dostidar and Mr Mohsin Reza, Project

Managers of IDEA’s WaSH project provided their support staff to assist us in the study. We

are indebted to all of them. Mr. Laksmikanta Singh, the executive director of the Ethnic

Community Development Organization helped us in getting access to the gardens.

Management of tea gardens helped us by allowing us to enter into tea gardens as well as

labour lines to gather data. They also participated in the research and shared their

experiences which are invaluable to this study. Our warm gratitude is due to them. We are

thankful to Mr. Ram Bhajan Koiry, the secretary of Bangladesh Tea Worker’s Association. He

supported us in getting access to tea gardens as well as arranging meetings with leaders of

Bangladesh Tea Worker’s Association and workshops with different stakeholders.

Researchers, academics, development activists, human rights activists, tea plantation

workers’ leaders and many other stakeholders participated in the draft report sharing

workshop held in Sylhet and provided valuable comments and suggestions. We express

special thanks to them. Our key informants sacrificed their valuable time to share their

experience and views on the plight of tea plantation workers. Our heartfelt gratitude is

offered to them. Above all, this research has been possible due to the warm cooperation of

tea plantation workers who shared their personal stories with the research team. In spite of

their busy schedules, they have given time willingly and provided valuable information

though they were unknown to us. We acknowledge their great sacrifice.
