how to decide whether it is oxide or dioxide?

Anonymous: In oxide, there is only one atom of oxygen but in Dioxide there are two atoms of Oxygen ( O 2) . Di means 2
TheElite07: okk..thnx
TheElite07: then wat about aluminium oxide..
TheElite07: its Al2O3
Anonymous: Aluminium has a valency 3 and oxygen 2 So on Cross multiplying the formula becomes Al2O3
TheElite07: then it should be aluminium trioxide...but its aluminium oxide..
Anonymous: It is in compound form. so we cannot say it trioxide.
TheElite07: CO2 is also compound but
TheElite07: we say it carbon dioxide
TheElite07: tell..me common
