when two or more resistors are said to be connected in parallel if the same potential difference exist accros each resistors
when number of resistors joined end to end so same current flows through each is said to be series connection

If the resistors are connected to only one wire which runs through the circuit, the combination is series.
Take two ends A and B. If, to go to B from A, there is only one path, it is in series.
If the resistors are connected to many wires taken from the main wire in the circuit, the combination is in parallel. Again, suppose there are two points A and B...if to go to B from A, there is more than one path, the combination is parallel.
