it is determined by the number of total pairs. If the number of total pairs is 3 then the molecule will be planner. This is called trigonal planner. Here total pair refers to the total number of bond pairs and lone pairs.

if it is less than 3 it will be linear and if greater than 3 it will not be planner but have a 3D structure
