If electronegativity difference is less than 1.7 then the bond is covalent if it is greater than 1.7 then it will be ionic.
Also you can determine the %ionic character as 16(xa -xb) + 3.5(xa - xb)^2

it is a special type of covalent bond between two atoms by which the atom which is more electronegative attracts more electrons from the bonded pair than the other atom.
