How to determine whether a substance is acidic or basic. Explain with appropriate example

to determine whether a substance is acidic or basic in nature just dip a litmus paper which is a natural indicator in the solution. for eg: if it is hcl take a blue litmus and dip it in the hcl solution then the litmus paper will turn red .it means that hcl is acidic ,if it is a base it will be blue itself and red litmus will turn blue
