How to differentiate between planets and stars from earth in night?

COMPARE THE RELATIVE BRIGHTNESS
1)planets reflect the bright light of year solay system's sun, which is relatively close to the earth.star ,by contrast,emit their own lights.
2)while some star may be much brighter and larger than our sun, these star are
much further from earth than the planet in our solar system.
