A compound sentence has more than one independent clause. A complex sentence has one independent clause with one or more dependent clauses. A compound-complex sentence has more than one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

The difference between simple sentence and compound sentence is the number of clauses the contain. Remember that a compound-complex sentence contains at least 2 complete sentences joined by a conjunction. Remember that a compound-complex sentence also contains a dependent clause (or introductory clause). Remember that the dependent clause must be introduced using a transitional word or phrase.

EXAMPLE: An example of a compound sentence is, 'This house is too expensive, and that house is too small.'

“I burned dinner” is a good example of a simple sentence/independent clause.
