Add Cacl2 to NaOH soln .
U will get a chalky white ppt of Ca(OH)2
Cacl2+2NaOH --> 2Nacl + Ca(OH)2{ppt}

But, of u add Cacl2 to NH4OH there is no ppt.{ No reaction}

Methods to distinguish between NaOH and NH_4OH.

  • The given compound can be distinguished through a physical and chemical reaction.

Physical test:

  • The physical properties used for differentiation are as follows:

1. NaOH is solid, white and crystalline whereas NH_4OH is colorless liquid.

2. NaOH has no odor whereas NH_4OH has a pungent smell.

Chemical test:

  • The chemical reaction used for differentiation is that both substances reacts with calcium salt differently.
  • In the case of NaOH, with calcium nitrate salt, it forms white precipitate due to the formation of calcium hydroxide.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction is as follows:

Ca(NO_3)_2+2NaOH\rightarrow 2NaNO_3+Ca(OH)_2

  • In the case of NH_4OH, with calcium nitrate salt, no such precipitate is formed.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction is as follows:

Ca(NO_3)_2+NH_4OH\rightarrow No reaction and no precipitation
