Hey Sowmiya!

You are going almost correctly. I will first give a hint. Try it yourself with that. If you still remain stuck after that, see the whole solution that follows.

HINT: There are two children. So after 20 years, the sum of their ages would be (Age of First Child + 20) + (Age of Second Child + 20) = y+40. Now I am sure you know what to do. Try it yourself first right now, without reading the complete solution below.

COMPLETE SOLUTION

Let Present Age of Father = x
Let Sum of Present Ages of Children = y

At present, we are given that age of father is twice that of sum of his children. This means that :

x = 2y -------(1)

After 20 years,

Age of Father = x+20
Sum of Ages of Children = y + 40

[There are two children. So after 20 years, sum will be greater than present age by 40 years]

We are given that both these quantities are equal. So,

x + 20 = y + 40
So, x = y + 20

Put x = 2y from equation (1)

So, 2y = y + 20
So, y = 20

From x = 2y, we have:

x = 40

Thus, Present Age of Father is 40 years.
