Hi there!

Learning algebra is not tough. You just need to practice it regulaly and understand it.

Let's start with the basics:

Variables - Letters that are used in any term or expression, which can take any number / value. It does not have a fixed value. For example- x, y, z, etc.

Constants - The number part of the term or expression, which has a constant / fixed value. For example - 4x, 9y, etc.

Like terms - Terms which have the exact same variables. For example - 3xy and 5xy, 8mn and 2nm. (In multiplication, it is commutative, so mn=nm)

Unlike terms - Terms which have different variables. For example - 3xy and 8z, 4n amd 2m.

Important points:
1) We don't multiplication sign in algebra. For example : x × y will be written as xy.
2) The other operations will be written in the same way as we do the normal addition or subtraction of integers or numbers. For example- x+y, x-y.
3) We use the fraction forms for division. For example- x/y.
4) We don't write 1 or (-1) in front of the variables. For example- 1x is written as simply x, and -1x is written simply as -x.

Now, we know how to use the operations in algebra.

Let's learn how to do the operations.

I always use the column method for addition and subtraction. It is the easiest way and you will be able to do it with ease. To to do this, we have to first write each terms and it's like terms in columns separately.

Let's start!

Let's add (3x + 4y - 6xy + 5) and (5x - 1y + 2xy - 2)

= 3x + 4y - 6xy  + 5          THIS IS CALLED
   5x - 1y  + 2xy - 2                     COLUMN METHOD
---------------------------
   8x + 3y - 4xy  + 3
---------------------------

Now, let's subtract (-x + 6z - 3y) from (8x - 5z + 2y)

= 8x - 5z + 2y
x + 6z + 3y                  (In subtraction, the signs of the second    ---------------------                equation changes to their opposite signs)
   9x + z  + 5y
---------------------

Using variables as given:
For example- Solve the following if a= 2, x = 3
⇒ (2a + 9x) - (xa)
⇒ {(2×2) + (9×3)} - (6 × 2)
⇒ (4 + 27) - 6
⇒ 31 - 6
⇒ 25

Here are some extra questions for your practice:

I) Write the following in algebraic forms-
1. x is added to 5
2. 5 is subtracted from the product of m and n.
3. 6 is added to the product of 3/4 and x.
4) xy is divided by 4
5) x is added the difference of mn and 7 and then divided by 8

II) Add or subtract-
1. (7x + 5y - 6m) + (-3x - y + 4m)
2. (3xy - 2y + z - 7) from (-6xy - 2y - z)

Coefficients:

The constant present in front of the variable is called as its coefficient of that term. For example-   the coefficient of x in the term 4xy will be 4y.

III) Write the coefficients of these terms-
1. Of x in 5xzy
2. Of m in 10mn
3. Of z in z
4. Of w in 6aw
5. Of rx in 8rxz

I HOPE IT HELPS YOU!!!
