firstly choose a system. Then draw all the external forces acting on it. After that draw the direction of acceleration. Then resolve all those forces which are parallel or perpendicular to acceleration. Then if acceleration is zero, resolve all the sources which are neither parallel nor perpendicular to the other forces. Apply Newton second law each direction.
