From the given point, lets name it P, draw a semi-circle with any convenient radius(but it should intersect the line). Mark the two points of intersection, say X and Y. Now keep your compass on point X, and the radius more than the half but less than full, of the semi-circle cut an arc. Now with the same radius, do not change the radius, with point Y cut an arc. Make sure the two arcs intersect each other. Now join the point of intersection with the point given on the line- P

draw a line ...measure a random length from one of its end which is more than half of the line,then draw 2 arcs from both the ends of the line ,above and below the line, join these 2 points and this will make it perpendicular to the given line
