Rule #1

Whether you are learning to ride or you need to remember what you learnt or you want to practice what you learnt, you need your head, wear a helmet. Wear it for your safety and not because the rule says so.

Rule #2

Motorcycling is not about riding "only" in a straight line, so if you are learning to ride, find a wide open space, and learn to negotiate a corner and most importantly how to take a u-turn. Find some stones or cones, position it accordingly so that you can create scenarios and learn how to enjoy and ride than be terrified when you get to the road for real.

Rule #3

Always look what is around you and what is going to come at you and anticipate what can come at you even if it doesn't. There is no greater danger switching off your brain and think you want to get from point A to point B, chances are you might not. So concentrate on what you do. Motorcycling is an art and will use all your senses including the sixth one.

Rule #4

Know your limits, and never push yourself for nothing. You are on a public road and think that everyone around you are zombies, dummies, brain dead ... whatever makes you happy. Remember, what keeps you happy keeps you alive.

Rule #5

If you are in India, "KEEP LEFT" and "GIVE WAY" and be patient.

Rule #6

If you are in a junction, always slow down, think just like you have the right of way, others do too, so there is nothing wrong in slowing down for someone to pass by. It is way better than everyone in a gridlock and stuck for hours.

Rule #7

Always indicate what you are going to do. Use your turn indicators.

Rule #8

Before you overtake somebody, check your mirrors, look forward, understand the limits of your vehicle and assess how much space you need to overtake and live another day. DO NOT OVERTAKE if you think you shouldn't and DO NOT OVERTAKE when you are negotiating a turn.

Rule #9

Your horn button will not speak for you or get you out of a traffic jam. So honk if and only if it is required. And if a pedestrian wants to cross the road, "ALWAYS" stop for them.

Rule #10

Know your vehicle thoroughly. Do not think that knowing everything about your motorcycle is only left to its mechanic. It always helps if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere

Rule #11

If you ride a scooter that has an electric start, remember batteries do not last forever and they will die on a really bad day. Practice how to kick start the scooter back to life

Rule #12

RED means you STOP and GREEN means you're free to go. AMBER/YELLOW/ORANGE means let go of the throttle and get ready for a RED or a GREEN. Jumping a red light puts your life on the razors edge for no logical reason and saving 100 seconds never made anyone anything. Please think it is your responsibility to obey traffic rules and make it a little easy for those cops who brave the elements and inhale all those exhaust fumes while we enjoy in our air-conditioned glass rooms.

I hope you take this in the right sense. As riding a motorcycle is not just about going for it. It is about making the experience pleasurable and safe for you as well as people around you. Motorcycling is addictive. So happy riding. Ride safe.
