Sodium reacts with water so vigorously that the hydrogen gas produced catches fire immediately.

So we cannot use water to extinguish sodium fire . To extinguish sodium fire we therefore use CCl4 that is pyrene.

A Class D extinguisher. These are especially designed for the unique chemistries of combusting metals, and usually operated by discharging a very fine powder that cakes to the burning metal and isolates it from the oxidiser of the fire.
