The calorific value  can be determined using the heat balance. Heat given by the fuel is equal to the heat gained by the water. RHS:mass if water×specific heat ×change in temperature. Equate LHS and RHS to get the calorific value.

Kj/Kg (Kilojoule/Kilogram)

The formula is, cal. value = 343.3 x fixed carbon % + α x % volatile matter kJ/kg. Goutel formula is unreliable for fuels having high percentage in oxygen.
