i'll explain u by an eg.
for eg, to find the chemical formulae of water....(H2O)

Hydrogen and Oxygen

H - 1 (valency)
O -2 ( valency)

criss cross valencies..
That is, v of h to o and vice versa

so...
H2O

if two elements have same valency, then it cancell out..

for eg, MgO
Mg=2, O=2
so...it cancells....
