the number of cells in the electronic configuration denotes the period the valency denotes the group

group number can be determined by the valency if the valency is one and 2 then the group number is 1, 2 respectively .

if the valency is above three then group number can be found by adding 10 to it.

The number of shells in the electronic configuration of the given element determine it's period i.e. if there are 3 shells in an atom then it will belong to period 3.
