Latitudes are imaginary lines drawn on a globe which are full circles and run in east-west direction.

✧ Equator is the most important latitude which divides the globe into two equal halves : Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. It is the biggest latitude.

✧ Equator is 0° latitude. In the north of 0°Latitude, there are 90 latitudes and in the south also 90 latitudes are marked.

✧ After a Northern latitude, letter N is added and in the same manner when we mention a Southern latitude, letter S is added to show its location in Northern or Southern Hemisphere.

✧ 90°N Latitude is a point, not a circle, and known as North Pole. In the same way, 90°S Latitude is also a point, not a circle, and known as South Pole.

✧ So there are total 179 latitudes on a globe. All latitudes are marked parallel to each other so they are also called parallels. The gap between two degrees is divided into 60 minutes. It is marked with ( ' ) sign.

✧ According to latitudes, India is in Northern Hemisphere. It extends between 8°4′N to 37°6′N. Its southern extent is 8°4′N and northern extent is 37°6′N.

Note: Letter N is used both after northern and southern extent as India is completely in Northern hemisphere.

✧ So India's latitudinal extent is about 30°.

✧ There are some important latitudes. 23°30′N Latitude is known as the Tropic of Cancer. It divides our country India into almost two equal halves.
