this is found by dividing the number of graduations by the first marked reading
eg.the first marked reading on a ruler is 1cm and there are 10 graduation or markings between the 0 and 1. Divide these 10 marks by the 1.
1 divided by 10 = (1/10)cm =0.1cm or 1mm
