Hello sis!!
Rajdeep here.....

Well, your question bears weight and is very good...
A bunch of thanks to you for asking such an important question.

Note:
There are 10 grids in a topographical map, both in length and in width.

Each grid measures 1km (2cm).
Hence, total length of all maps (given in examinations) are 10 x 1 km = 10 km.

Thanks!!

Measuring length in a topographic map

  • when a normal map is considered it is difficult to accurately find the length of a certain area or the length between two places but if the map is topographic then it is rather much easier to find the length between two places on the map.
  • This is possible because the topography map is drawn on a base with  rows and columns making grids over which the map is drawn. The grids are present such that the ratio between the actual distance between places is shrunken and Drawn in form of map on the grids such that the millimetres and centimetres distance between two places on map can be converted into kilometres and actual distance between two places can be easily calculated.
  • The distance between two places on the map is basically the closest distance or the straight distance between the two places as can be seen from an aerial view.
  • The slopes and other geographical variations like distance of climbing or getting down a slope, water bodies etc. present on the actual scenario that may affect the distance between two places in real are not calculated and the only distance that can be measured is the aerial view of the shortest distance between two points.
