How to find the log of any number with an example:

For Example Let Us Find The Log Of 24.86:

1. Ignore the decimal point and look for 24 in the first vertical column.

2. In this horizontal row for 24 and under the column headed by 8 (third digit of 2486) we find the number 3945 at the intersection.

3. In continuation of this horizontal row and under the mean difference column on the right headed by 6 (fourth digit of 2486), we find the number 11 at the intersection.

Adding 11 to 3945, we get 3956 which is the mantissa.

4. Hence log (24.86) = 1 +.3956 = 1.3956 (characteristic is 1).

Note that log (0.2486) = -1+ .3956 = 1.3956.

(We cannot write this as -1.3956 since the characteristic 1 alone is negative)

We have to do this with the help of a log table which is attached below.
