write Electronic Configuration...

for example

Na (atomic number 11)

K shell - 2 fully filled

L shell - 8 fully filled

M shell - 1

So from M shell it can easily loose 1 electron..

So it's valency is 1..

sometimes group number also help you to find valency

itsmohit10gmailcom: valency of a compound..can you explain your question in detail
akki08: I mean I want to know how to know valencies of compounds
akki08: such as SO4
akki08: OH
akki08: CO3
itsmohit10gmailcom: just remember charge on such species..for example OH....O has valency -2..H has valency +1...so totally (1-2 = -1)..
itsmohit10gmailcom: Sulphate Ion valency is 2.. carbonate ion valency is 2
akki08: thank you so much
itsmohit10gmailcom: welcome.. hopefully you get some help from my side
akki08: hmm

Valency is combining capacity of an element. To know the valency of a given element firstly u need to know about the electronic configuration of the given element..4 EXample, given element is oxygen ,nd we have to find its valency, foremost we will see it's electronic configuration, since it contains 8 electrons it's electronic configuration will be 2,6 and it needs two more electrons to complete it's octet..it Will have to form covalent or ionic bond to satisfy it's valency..
I tried my best...HOPE it helps uh ☺

akki08: okh thank you so much
sophiadown: um srry..I haven't seen compound I wrote of element anyways
akki08: its okay
akki08: I got the ans sis
sophiadown: in compound u can't derive the valency of atoms in radical by looking at formula.it needs thorough understanding!!!
