if the outermost orbit of an atom contains 1,2,3,or 4 electron then it is a metal
otherwise if outermost orbit contains 5,6, or 7 electron then it is a non-metal
otherwise if outermost orbit contains 5,6, or 7 electron then it is a non-metal

Here let's take the case in sodium with at.no as 11
so, p is 11 as well as e because the atom is neutral
n can be found by subtracting at.no and at.wt
And to find if it is a metal and non - metal
take the electronic configuration like
p & e 11
e.c 2,8,1
one e in the outermost shell
hence it is a metal
