you can consider the outermost shell electrons present in an atom as oxidation state.
Let us consider boron which has atomic no. 5 and it's electronic configuration is 1s^2 2s^2 2p^1. It's outermost orbitals are 2s^2 and 2p^1. Totally it has 3 electrons in iys outermost orbit. So it's oxidation state is +3.
