DIAMAGNETIC:

  • The substances which are slightly repelled in the magnetic field are diamagnetic substances
  • They do not have any unpaired electrons.

PARAMAGNETIC:

  • The paramagnetic substances are slightly attracted towards the magnetic field.
  • They will have atleast one unpaired electron in outermost shell.

TO FIND PARAMAGNETIC AND DIAMAGNETIC:

  • It is determined by the spin only magnetic moment on transition elements

ų(mu) = root of n(n+2) BM

BM IS Bohr Magneton

FOR EXAMPLE:

1)Sc+2 - 3d1 ų = root of 1(1+2) = 1.73 BM

This is paramagnetic

2) Zn+2 - 3d10 ų = root of 0(0+2) = 0

This is diamagnetic
