Explanation:

Suppose it is sodium 11

Electronic configuration is 2,8,1

So how many shells are there? 3 right? So it is in period 3. Now how many electrons are there in outermost shell? 1 right? So it lies in group 1.

If the number of outermost electrons is more than 3, that is either 3 or more, then we add 10 to it to get the group number. So it is like if it is chlorine, 17, 2,8,7 it is in period 3 and group 7+10=17

Some more examples

Mg, 2,8,2 period 3 group 2

Aluminum 2,8,3 period 3 and group 10+3=13.

So if 3 or more, then +10 to group. Period is just the number of shells
