The factors of any number is find out by the method of prime factorisation.

For example, consider a number 240.

It can be prime factorized as:

240 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 5

Now by taking different combination of prime factors at a single time we get different factors.

For example, 2 × 2 = 2, 2 × 2 × 3  = 12

In this manner by taking different combinations we get the following factors of 240:

1, 2, 3, 4,  5,  6,  8,  10,  12,  15,  16,  20,  24,  30,  40,  48,  60,  80,  120 and 240
