how to find the group number in modern peridic table

in modern periodic table GROUP NUMBER refers to the number of electrons in the valence shell of an element..
e.g Helium has 7 electrons in its valence shell so it is placed in group No 7..Similarly Na has 1 electron in its valence shell so it is placed in group 1

Ayesha059: Al has atomic number 13.it accomodates 2 electron in first shell,8 in second and 3 in last shell.as its valence shell has 3 electrons it is placed in group no 13
Ayesha059: we cant say it will be placed in group 3..bcz group no 1,2. 13 to 18 are main group elements while 3 to 12 are transition elements.
