Ratio is a means to compare quantities.

If you have two quantities x and y, you turn them into a fraction ( x/y ) and turn them into their simplest form.

For example, a forest has 150 bananas and 30 oranges, we have to find the ratio of oranges to bananas.

[ note - the quantity which comes before the other ( here, oranges TO bananas ) , will be the numerator and the second quantity will be in the denominator. Since the question asks to find the ratio of oranges to bananas, oranges will be in the numerator. ]

Ratio of oranges to bananas = no. of oranges / no. of bananas

= 30 / 150 = 3 / 15 = 1 / 5

Therefore, ratio = 1:5
