Determine the maximum voltage for your voltmeter reading. You need to figure out whether it is DC or AC current. If you are measuring AA batteries, for example, set the voltage reading at 2 volts. Make sure you set at DC. Otherwise, if you are measuring an electrical outlet on a wall. You need to measure it at AC reading at a max. voltage of 200 volts. Be careful not to confuse between DC and AC settings. You might damage your voltmeter.
