The below is only for first 20 elements...
if an atom has there outer sheel less than five electron than that is only it's valency e. g. Na has one electron on its outer Sheel so One is the valency of Na, but if outer sheel have five electron or more than five than subtract it by 8.e.g chlorine has 7 electron on its outer sheel so the valency of Cl=8-7=1.

the valency of an atom equal to the number of electron in outershell if that the number is four or less. and valency also find by periodic table . I hope this help you
