For non-metal
⇒ 8 - number of electrons in the outermost (valence) shell of atom.

for example, valency of sulphur ( a non-metal)
sulphur have six electrons in the outermost shell of atom
 ⇒ 8 - 6 = 2 is the valency of sulphur

For metal
⇒ number of electrons in the outermost (valence) shell of atom.

for example, valency of aluminium ( a metal )
aluminium has 3 electrons in the outermost shell of atom
⇒ 3 is the valency of aluminium

Vishal1102: mm
Ankit1234: hey u can ask anything with me on chat
Vishal1102: ok
Ankit1234: silver has 5 shells
Vishal1102: yeah
Ankit1234: in the fifth shell .. silver has 1 electron
Ankit1234: silver is a metal
Vishal1102: ok
Ankit1234: so valency of silver is 1
Vishal1102: how 1
