if it is a metal has 1, 2 , 3 , 4 electrons in its outer most shell then it's valency will be 1, 2, 3,4

for w

ex lithium has electrical configuration 2,1 then it's valence is 1

if it is a non metal or it's outermost shell have 5, 6, 7 then yoy will subtract from 8

for ex oxygen it's configuration 2, 6

it's valency 8-6=2
