Compounds do not have a valency . it is the elements of the compounds which have the valency. for ionic compounds, the charge on ions is equal to valency of that element.for example in NaCl,sodium and chlorine have valency of 1.for covalent compounds, valency of elements is equal to number of bonds made by the element .example in H2O,hydrogen has  a valency 1 and oxygen has a valency of 2.
