Answer:Write down the electrinic configuration of the compound

if the ottermost shell has 1or 7 electons the valancy is 1

If it has 2 or 6 electrons the valancy is 2.....an so on....

First notice the valence electron of the element.

then check what would be easy for it gaining the electron or losing the electron.

For ex - Chlorine

Atomic no.-17

For chlorine gaining an electron is much easier than losing 7 electron.

So it's valency is -1.

Similarly for sodium

atomic no. -11

it is easier for sodium to lose 1 electron to complete it's octate.

So valency of sodium is +1. This is how Valency is determined.
