Valency is the number of valence electrons present in the outermost orbit of the shell. so to check the valency, check the number of valence electrons in the outermost shell.

Eg - Magnesium's electronic configuration is ( 2, 8, 2) the number of valence electrons in the outermost shell is 2.ie the last shell from left. therefore it's valency is 2

hope it helps

Answer:

Valeny of an element is find out with the help of its electronic configuration.

Explanation:

Electronic configuration:- the number of electrons present in its K, L, M and N shells.

eg:- Sodium ( Na) - 2,8 and 1

so, its valency is 1.

But the maximum valency can be 4 only it's called tetravalent .

for example:- Carbon - 2and 4

so , its valency is 4.

when we move along period in the periodic table the maximum valency is 4 and then it starts decreasing to 0 .

IN SHORT,

the valency of an element is the electrone present in its outer most shell but the maximum valency is 4.

Hope it helps you.
