how to find valency of a compound??? explain with examples..

we can find the valency by seeing the number at the top right corner of the element.
For example:-
Mg^+2.......
here the valency is +2

valency means the number of electrons present in the outermost shell . ex oxygen = valency is 6 but in case of compound we are not finding valency ..

Maithu1: hey ,I am sorry for that the orignal answer is : consider CO2 first take valency of carbon =4 , then take valency of Oxygen =6 *2=12 ( twice oxygen ) thefore by adding 4+12= 16
