in periodic table the number of electrons has been given from which u can prepare the octet and can find out the valency.Valency is always determined from the outermost shell.

First find that how many electrons are present in the outermost orbit of the atom.

Then find that how many atoms should be added or should be released from the shell to make it balance that is if we add the electrons the sum should be 8 and if we release the electrons then there should be no electrons in the outermost shell. The number that we decrease or increase in the outermost shell is the valency of the atom.

The second method is that if we look carefully then we will find that in Periodic Table the valencies of all elements are present in a pattern -- 1 0 1 2 3 4 3 2 1 0 1 2 3 4 3 2 1 0 1 2 3 4 3 2 1 0.......
