The valency of an atom is equal to the number of electrons in the outer shell if that number is four or less. Otherwise, the valency is equal to eight minus the number of electrons in the outer shell. Once you know the number of electrons, you can easily calculate the valency.

So now , we Have Iron (Fe) as an example .

Atomic number of Fe - 26 = K  L  M  N

                                              2   8  8  8

Now , we came to know that the outer orbit of Iron has 7 electrones .

So obviously , the valency of Iron is .....................

Nopp . In thi case we have to wrrite its Electronic Configuration .

E.C. of Fe :- 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d6

Now ,  The energy of 4s and 3d orbital is similar (4s has slightly higher energy). Also note that the 3d orbital has 1 electron pair, rest of the electrons are unpaired. Now, iron exhibits 2 valence states of +2 and +3.
