How to find valency of ionic compounds?

AnushreeSaxena1: The valency of an atom is equal to the number of electrons in the outer shell if that number is four or less. Otherwise, thevalency is equal to eight minus the number of electrons in the outer shell. Once youknow the number of electrons, you can easily calculate the valency.
kartikeyaa: Thanks but i already know that ._. Do you know to calculate valency of a ionic compound?
kartikeyaa: Like So4^-2 ,HCO3^-?
kartikeyaa: Do you know ho2 to*
AnushreeSaxena1: The rules of valency in compounds say that the total valency of the hydrogens must equal the valency of the oxygen. If the most electronegative element is assigned a negative valency and the most electropositive element a positive valencythen the sum of the atoms' valencies must equal zero.
kartikeyaa: I said ho2 by mistake , i actually meant 'how'.
