The valency of an atom is equal to the number of electrons in the outer shell if that number is four or less. Otherwise, the valency is equal to eight minus the number of electrons in the outer shell. Once you know the number of electrons, you can easily calculate the valency.

Answer:

the valency of the atom , means the combining capacity of the atom.

which means if the atom has 1 or 2 or 3 electrons on the outermost shell ,then it's valency will be the same .these types of atoms loose there valence electrons to combine with other atom.

if the atom has 5 or 6 or 7 electrons ,then the valency would be 8 minus the no .of valence electrons. these types of atom gain the remaining electrons to complete their octate , and to combine with other atom.

in case of nitrogen, the other most electrons are 5 in number.

thus it's valency is (8-5) ie. 3
