First of all multiply the first and the last term and whatever the product you got find its factors.Then select the factor which is suitable for the polynomial

and split the middle term i.e, if you multiply the factors you have to get the the last term and if you add you have to get the middle term..example {X^2 - 2X -8} slpit is as [ X^2 - 4X+2X -8] so if you multiply the 2 middle terms i.e, -4 × 2 you get the last term -8 and if you add the middle terms i.e,

-4X +(+2X)

-4X + 2X

-2X

this is how to split the middle term and then next step you can take common terma and put them in bracket and solve it to get the zeroes.
