\underline{\underline{\sf{\maltese\:\:Question}}}

  • How to get CHCl₃ from CH₃COCH₃ ?

\underline{\underline{\sf{\maltese\:\:Concept}}}

  • CH₃COCH₃ is chemical formula for acetone
  • IUPAC name of CH₃COCH₃ is 2-propanone
  • CHCl₃ is chemical formula for Chloroform
  • Chloroform is also known as Trichloromethane
  • Acetone is the ketone and Chloroform is an alkyl halide

\underline{\underline{\sf{\maltese\:\:To\:Convert}}}

  • CH₃COCH₃ (Acetone) to CHCl₃ (Chloroform)

\underline{\underline{\sf{\maltese\:\:Solution}}}

Acetone is a 3 carbon ketone having 1 carbonyl group and chloroform is alkane having 3 chlorine attached to it. First see the structure of both the compounds  (See Attachment - 1). First step will be chlorination of the acetone (See Attachment - 2). In second step treat the above compound with calcium hydroxide so calcium acetate will be removed and chloroform is obtained (See Attachment - 3).

In Simple Words,

From acetone, we have to remove one acetyl group and two hydrogen atoms and we have to add three chlorine atoms to get chloroform.

(See Attachment - 4)
