The colloidal particles carry an electric charge. The most important property of colloidal solution is that all suspended particles possess either positive or a negative charge. i.e. they carry the same nature of the charge.

When an electric current is passed through a colloidal solution, the charged particles move towards the oppositely charged electrode and coagulate due to loss of charge. The phenomenon involving the migration of colloidal particles under the influence of electric field towards the oppositely charged electrode, is called electrophoresis or cataphoresis.
