In some cases, fibroblasts are identified based on their spindle shape combined with positive staining for the mesenchymal marker vimentin and the absence of staining for epithelial or other mesenchymal cell types, such as muscle cells, astrocytes, or hematopoietic cells (Chang et al. 2002).The fibroblasts are predominant stromal cell type seen in soft connective tissues. They appear as plump spindle shaped or stellate shaped cells (active fibroblasts) with centrally placed oval or round nucleus [Figure 1].
